Case Study: Benefits Consulting / Health Plan Consolidation

Challenge

A retail distributor with six branches throughout three states had been sponsoring three health plans, each separately rated and managed by an HMO. Costs of those plans were expected to increase 24%.

The client’s visions were to:

Local brokers were not able to effectively consolidate benefit plans across state lines or access the data necessary to evaluate self-funding. Due to the client’s mid-market size, large national consulting firms deployed only junior resources who were less experienced in managing interstate benefits.

Solution

A partnership was formed with Newton Consulting. Newton went into action by first meeting with the client and listening to goals and objectives to gain a thorough understanding of their business needs, company culture, and budgetary constraints. Newton committed senior resources who developed short- and long-term plans and were responsible for strategy implementation. Because Newton does not receive commission on benefits plans, Newton worked in the client’s best interest at all times. Additionally, as a licensed broker in multiple states, Newton was able to effectively manage the consolidation.

Results

Newton Consulting analyzed the benefits and costs for each of the three plans to create a consolidated option that took advantage of the client’s collective size – one Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP) with a Health Reimbursement Arrangement, along with a traditional PPO option, which offered employees a choice with similar costs as their previous coverage. Newton also educated the client on the CDHP along with self funding options to consider in the long term.

The client’s decision to provide the consolidated plan achieved goals by:

To help ease the transition, the senior resource at Newton, who understood both the plan changes and the client’s culture, actively participated in educational meetings at all six client locations. This full support and service were part of Newton’s value. As a result, first-year participation in the CDHP plan was 50%.

With the successful plan implementation, the client saved 14% in overall costs the first year, and with a favorable loss ratio, experienced a 0% rate increase the second year. The total premium savings for the client in year one were 200% greater than Newton Consulting’s annual fees, providing an excellent value-to-cost ratio supported by excellent services and results that exceeded client expectations.

Case Study: Recruiting Solutions

Challenge

The Pittsburgh office of the largest Canadian-owned pension and benefits consulting and outsourcing firm had significant staffing challenges. Their corporate recruiting team was based in Toronto, and had limited resources available. The Pittsburgh office was growing quickly, and had a need to get several top-notch people on board quickly to support demanding client needs.

Solution

A partnership was formed with Newton Consulting and our recruiting services director. Newton quickly went into action by meeting with each hiring manager to get a thorough understanding of the business and hiring needs. Newton developed a sourcing plan and behavior-based phone interview templates. Newton also quickly began sourcing and interviewing potential candidates. Each qualified candidate was submitted to the client with a thorough set of interview notes and recommendations for next steps. Because Newton is not paid for hires made, they are completely invested in partnering with their client to ensure they are hiring the RIGHT people, and not just making a hire so a fee is earned.

Results

Within 200 hours, Newton helped the client hire six people, and provided a sufficient pipeline of all candidates that were sourced and interviewed, which was theirs to keep for future hiring with no additional fees to be incurred.

The advantages of using Newton Consulting's HR Services vs. in-house recruiting or contingent recruiting services are as follows:
